Opening day nears for grille in 12 Points

TERRE HAUTE — It’s been talked about for months, and the anticipation has been high.

Next week, the doors will finally open on the long-delayed Old Bank Grille in the 12 Points neighborhood.

Restaurant owner and professional chef Jimmy Saliju told the Tribune-Star on Friday that the restaurant will open to the public for business after a soft opening this weekend.

The espresso and gelato bar will be opened in a couple of weeks, Saliju said.

The opening of the restaurant has been delayed for several months due to state permit issues. A new sprinkler system was installed in recent weeks, and the system was finally inspected an approved by the state Division of Fire and Building Safety.

While the business had received approval from city officials, delays cropped up on the state level.

“Sometimes it takes a little longer to get state approval,” said Saliju, who will be one of four chefs in the kitchen.

Applications are still be accepted for all positions in the kitchen, serving and management areas, he said.

Saliju’s restaurant is filling space originally designed as a bank in the city’s 12 Points neighborhood. After operating as a bank for many decades, the building later housed a hair salon. Saliju worked for months to convert the historic, two-story brick building into a restaurant in which to showcase his skills as a French-trained chef.
