Terre Haute’s Mayhew receives Moench Commendation

TERRE HAUTE — Robert B. Mayhew, a mechanical engineering graduate from Terre Haute, received the Herman A. Moench Distinguished Senior Commendation during Rose-Hulman’s commencement Saturday.

The award recognizes the graduating senior who shows “honesty, self-discipline, compassion, and moral conviction, for all of which the student must be respected by student peers.” The recipient is chosen by vote of the faculty and professional staff.

He has been a student counselor for the Operation Catapult summer STEM program; a tour guide for the admissions office; he’s been involved in varsity track, cross country, and soccer; and served as a tutor for the Homework Hotline service.

Mayhew has also been a member of the  Rose-Hulman Chorus, drama club, photography club, and “A Capella” singing club. He was active in the campus’ Intervarsity Christian Fellowship organization.

Rose Professor Keith Hoover commented, “Like Herman Moench, Rob Mayhew has clearly made Rose-Hulman a better place. But, after graduation, he will endeavor to make the entire world a better place.”

This summer, Mayhew’s will go to work for innovator Dean Kamen’s DEKA organization, an engineering development firm that focuses on medical and humanitarian projects for underdeveloped countries.

Mayhew, who was home-schooled for his entire educational career prior to attending Rose-Hulman, said the award came as a big surprise. His father, James, teaches mechanical engineering at Rose-Hulman. He thanked both his parents, including his mother, Mary, as well as RHIT faculty, for making his success possible.
