Victim died of head, chest trauma

TERRE HAUTE — Police believe a death that took place late Wednesday night in Terre Haute was a homicide.

The Terre Haute Police Department responded to a call about 11:40 p.m. regarding a person down in the street at the intersection of Fifth and Swan streets. When they arrived, emergency responders found a man, aged 30, whose name has not yet been released, dead at the scene.

The victim died from multiple head and chest trauma, said Dr. Susan Amos, Vigo County coroner.

A witness told police an altercation took place before the death and that a vehicle was involved. Amos confirmed the death appeared to be a “hit and run, basically.”

It is not yet known whether the victim had been previously inside a vehicle, she said.

The victim is believed to be from the Terre Haute area, Amos said. His family was still being notified late Thursday so his name was not being released.

Drug and alcohol tests are pending.
