Work on dam at Fowler Park to begin in August

TERRE HAUTE — Work on a dam at Fowler Park is slated to begin in August, after the Vigo County Parks and Recreation Board approved a request to seek a $600,000 budget transfer from the Vigo County Council.

The transfer, if approved by the County Council, would come from the park’s budget operating balance and be moved into the park’s contractual services budget line. The cost of the project is $600,510.

Adam Grossman, assistant parks superintendent, said the lake would be lower by at least four feet. The parks department is slated to open bids on the dam repair project in early July.

In other business, Grossman said by the end of this week, he will start to chemically treat more than 100 elm trees in Fowler Park to protect them against the emerald ash borer.

The Parks Board also approved a claim for $35,325, which is part of a $85,450 project to construct a building at Dewey Point Trailhead. The Wabash Valley Riverscape is contributing $75,000 toward the trailhead project that this year will include a shelter, restroom and parking area.

Additional work will be done on the trailhead next year.
