The Tribune-Star

STAUNTON — A 10-year-old Clay County girl was transferred to an Indianapolis hospital Tuesday after she was struck by a car while riding her bicycle.

The Indiana State Police stated that the girl was riding her bike near Columbus and Lake streets in Staunton about 5:15 p.m. when she rode into the path of a 2002 Saturn being driven by Kay-Lynn Ethington, 17, of Brazil.

Police said the child appeared to receive serious head, internal and leg injuries. She was taken to Union Hospital and later transferred to an Indianapolis hospital, according to a Union Hospital official. She was in stable condition at the time of the transfer, the official said.

Speed did not appear to be a factor in the incident, according to state police. The child was not wearing a bike helmet at the time of the crash, but helmets are not required.

No citations were issued.

The crash was investigated by ISP Trooper Ian Portteus assisted by Troopers David Petrowski, Kyle Hall, the Clay County Sheriff’s Department, Trans Care and Staunton Fire/Rescue.
