Vigo schools offer counselors today for students, staff

TERRE HAUTE —

Vigo County School Corp. counselors will be prepared today to talk to any students or staff upset about Friday’s tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary.

Rick Stevens, VCSC assistant director of student services, said he is contacting school counselors this weekend.

He is asking counselors to work with school staff to identify any children who might be having a reaction to what happened and need counseling services.

Also, outside agencies such as Hamilton Center are being contacted as a backup to provide additional counselors, if they are needed. They will be on standby.

“I think a lot of kids need a lot of reassurance and support so that they realize school is a very safe place,” Stevens said.

Superintendent Dan Tanoos said the tragedy in Connecticut “hit home” for all educators. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to all families in this thoughtless tragedy,” he said.
