St. Joseph Parish cookbook sales aid food bank

TERRE HAUTE — Copies of “Feeding the Flock” are moving faster than white chicken chili as a historic parish raises money for a local food bank.

Sally Whitehurst, chairwoman of the St. Joseph University Parish “Feeding the Flock” committee said Friday the group is down to 800 copies of the cookbook. About 2,200 were originally printed. As part of St. Joseph’s 175th anniversary, the parish has prepared a 525-recipe cookbook for sale, proceeds of which are being split between the Catholic Charities of Terre Haute Food Bank and the Samaritan Food Pantry.

“And if we get them all sold, we’ll have over $13,000 to split between the two charities,” Whitehurst said. “They’re selling beautifully.”

The book’s cover features a mother hen and her chicks, an allusion to the idea of feeding one’s flock, which also conveys a Christian message, she explained. The books are being sold for $10 at stores throughout the Wabash Valley, as well as First Financial Bank branches.

The parish, now located at 113 S. Fifth St., has an extensive history which includes a visit by St. Mother Theodore Guerin and five nuns from the Sisters of Providence on Oct. 22, 1840.

Whitehurst said the church wanted to give back to the community as part of its anniversary, and the cookbooks not only make for a great fundraiser, but the product itself can serve as a gift this holiday season. Recipes range in difficulty from the very simply to complex, with vegetarian fare such as “Judy’s Veggie Pie” and vegetarian minced meat nutbread to “Spicy Dr. Pepper Pulled Pork” and “White Chicken Chili.”

John Etling, executive director of Catholic Charities of Terre Haute said his organization appreciates the support.

“We’re at a pace to provide about 2 million meals a year,” he said that evening, adding Terre Haute is a very generous community. “And we’re still seeing more people who want to give.”

The cookbooks make for great gifts, and Etling remarked he and his wife continue to give such items as wedding presents as they received one upon at their marriage.

“It gives everybody something tangible,” he said, describing the fundraiser as a great idea.
