St. George’s in WTH to turn 100

WEST TERRE HAUTE — A little church atop a hill west of the Wabash River is celebrating a century-long ministry.

St. George’s Episcopal Church of West Terre Haute is marking its 100th anniversary this year with a celebratory open house July 13.

The open house will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the church, 1337 N. Smith Place on Ferguson Hill.

Visitors will see photos that span the life of the church and visit with direct descendants of the founding families, according to information provided by the church. Guests will also be able to sample “old world” foods during the open house.

Immigrants from England, Scotland and Ireland who traveled to America in the early 1900s eventually made their way to West Terre Haute, where many of them found work in the coal mines.

Their faith took root in the small hamlet, where St. George’s has nurtured faith and the community for a hundred years.
