Road work stops, but restrictions remain

TERRE HAUTE — While the Indiana Department of Transportation placed a holiday moratorium at noon Thursday on all road work, motorists in Vigo and Clay counties will still face single-lane traffic restrictions in some areas over the Fourth of July weekend.

One-lane travel will remain on Interstate 70 bridges over Sugar Creek and Clear Creek near the West Terre Haute exit for Old U.S. 40. The bridge decks on I-70 are being replaced, as is a deck on the Exit 3 ramp bridge to Old U.S. 40.

The $9.7 million project includes resurfacing Old U.S. 40 from just east of I-70 to 0.3 of a mile east of U.S. 150.

Work is slated for completion in May 2016.

That project is 34 percent completed, INDOT spokeswoman Debbie Calder said.

Single-lane restrictions will remain on I-70 just east of U.S. 41 and at the intersection of Indiana 46/U.S. 40.

Work at Indiana 46/U.S. 40, which started June 30, is for patching and resurfacing the interstate from 1 mile west to 1 mile east of that intersection.

Construction of the Indiana 641 bypass will also continue to impact motorists this year near that intersection.

Beaty Construction Inc. of Boggstown was awarded a $46.8 million contract to construct the last section of the 641 bypass.

This year the company is slated to construct an I-70/Indiana 641 interchange ramp and a local service road along the east side of Indiana 46.

This road will service homes, the KOA Campground and INDOT’s Terre Haute subdistrict office.

The entire Indiana 641 bypass project is scheduled for completion by fall of 2016, Calder said.

In Clay County, INDOT workers by Thursday had barrels and barricades removed “to the safest extent possible” at the intersection of Indiana 59 and Interstate 70, allowing two-lane traffic, Calder said.

“Where we can, we are removing barriers, but some lane restrictions will remain on larger projects that cannot be safely opened to traffic for the weekend,” Calder said.

Eastbound and westbound traffic along U.S. 40 through Brazil will also be limited to one lane through the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

Work on this project, which started June 2, includes replacing pavement on U.S. 40 from Indiana 340 to Wal-Mart and on Indiana 340 from west of Waterworks Road to U.S. 40. Work includes new storm drainage structures, curbs and gutters, and new sidewalks.

The intersection of U.S. 40 and Indiana 340 will also be realigned, and pavement on Indiana 340 will be reconstructed with new storm drainage. This section is slated to be reopened in October.

The U.S. 40 pavement replacement project was awarded to Gradex Inc. for $19.7 million and is slated for completion in the summer of 2016.

Road work on INDOT projects statewide will resume Monday morning, Calder said.
