Clarifying new Harden Lake signs

ROCKVILLE — Cecil M. Harden Lake, also known as Raccoon Lake, is currently experiencing better water clarity than in recent memory, according to lake manager Joe Staigl.

According to a press release, white “Water Quality Notice” signs posted around the lake are to inform the public that what are called harmful algal blooms have occurred at the lake in the past and could appear again.

The signs are left up year round in accordance with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources response standard operating procedure.

Harden Lake beach is being monitored. HAB sampling conducted on June 10 by IDEM indicated cyanobacteria cell counts results of 4,700 cells/ml, which means that currently there are no HABs present.

IDEM plans to re-sample the beach on Tuesday, according to the release.

The lake is open, according to the release, “and visitors are encouraged to enjoy recreational activities.”
