ALERT: Dangerous road conditions persist due to black ice, accumulating snow

TERRE HAUTE — A traffic emergency has been declared in Vigo County by local law enforcement.

The Vigo County Sheriff’s Department is reporting extremely hazardous icy road conditions, and motorists are urged to stay off the roadways until conditions improve.

This morning’s precipitation created a layer of black ice throughout the county, reports Chief Deputy Clark Cottom at 11:20 a.m., and snow is now falling, compounding the hazardous conditions.

In a two-hour period from 9 to 11 a.m., the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office received calls for more than 20 crashes and slide-offs. Three of those crashes have resulted in personal injury.

Icy roads led to a crash involving a Vigo County school bus. The bus was rear-ended as it stopped for the railroad tracks near U.S. 41 and Harlan Drive south of Terre Haute. No one was injured in that crash.

Interstate 70 westbound has been closed in Putnam and Clay County due to an accident with two serious injuries. All westbound traffic has been diverted onto U.S. 40. Vigo County officials are expecting a heavy increase of traffic on U.S. 40 and Indiana 46.
