Police responded to the single motor-vehicle accident at about 9 p.m. on U.S. 36 near Midway Road, between Montezuma and Rockville.

When officers arrived, they found two people trapped inside the vehicle, driver Larry McDaniel, 53, and passenger Ellen McDaniel, 23, both of Montezuma.

Larry McDaniel was pronounced dead at the scene, while Ellen McDaniel was transported to Union Hospital of Clinton for minor injuries.

Larry McDaniel was driving a Ford Ranger west on U.S. 36 when it struck a patch of black ice, which caused the vehicle to go off the road and strike a tree, according to the sheriff’s department.
