Man crashes car into barn while allegedly fleeing after burglary attempt

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man who allegedly fled from an attempted burglary scene was not injured after crashing his car into a barn at a high rate of speed.

Mathew Ewing, 23, was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary, criminal recklessness and criminal mischief. He appeared via video in Vigo Superior Court 5 on Monday where an Oct. 1 trial date was set, along with a $50,000 cash bond.

The Vigo County Sheriff’s Department reports that police were alerted to an attempted burglary in the 2600 block of East Phylbeck Avenue at about 4 a.m. Neighbors reported that a silver car had been parked in an apartment complex and that its driver broke out a window of an apartment door. Before gaining entry to the residence, however, the suspect got back into his vehicle and fled the area. But he was followed by a neighbor, authorities reported.

A deputy patrolling in the area prior to receiving a 911 call about the attempted break-in saw both the suspect vehicle and the pursuing neighbor traveling erratically on Clinton Street, and then turn west onto Hasselburger. The deputy attempted to catch up to the vehicles and finally did after the Ewing vehicle wrecked into a barn at U.S. 41 and Hasselburger.

The neighbor who followed the suspect vehicle estimated that Ewing’s car was traveling at least 110 mph when it went airborne at the highway and hit the barn.

Ewing is due to return to court July 22 for an attorney appearance. Ewing also faces an accusation of probation violation.
