Just shocking the way they used to

Antique tractors star ag show

PRAIRIETON — Horses Pete and Bud pulled a1920’s binder down a field of wheat on Saturday near Prairieton in preparation for the 33rd year of a tractor show at the 2014 Vigo County Fair.

Antique machinery enthusiasts were bundling the wheat so it could be threshed and the straw be baled on next Saturday and Sunday at the fairgrounds.

“When you look at agriculture today, you see big fancy combines and tractors,” said Bill Nicoson, an antique machinery enthusiast, as he looked at Pete and Bud work. “We’re showing people what farming was like back in the day.”

He said they host games like teeter-totter, where participants try to balance their vehicles on a small platform; blindfold races, where a couple pairs up with the driver blindfolded and the other participant tells them where to go; and a parade that “will go through Terre Haute then back down Indiana] 63.”

“Hopefully that’ll spark an interest in people,” Nicoson said.

He said people in the group have “all sorts of major brands.”

“People have AC, Internationals, Fords — pretty much everything you can think of,” Nicoson said.

Fred Hartmann, who started collecting antiques when he was 50, said it wasn’t something he expected to get into.

“I saw an antique tractor at the fairgrounds,” he said as he wiped the sweat off his forehead. “A week passed, and I thought to myself, ‘Hey I wouldn’t mind having one of them.’ One of my tractors is older than me. It was made in 1928.”

Hartmann said he wants to “keep the past going.”

“It’s kind of cool having something around older than me,” he said as he chuckled.

The tractor show is running both July 5 and 6, with games spread throughout each day. The antique tractors parade of power starts at 1 p.m. next Sunday.

“I remember my dad told me once to never cut down trees,” Nicoson said as he looked at Pete and Bud. “He said they’re for the horses to rest under.”
