Extension of New Margaret approved

Board OKs two food sites’ sidewalk seating, bypass sewer work

TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Board of Public Works and Safety Monday approved a $30,000 contract with HNTB, an engineering firm, to design and plan additional roadway to support the Meijer grocery store coming to the city’s east side.

The contract will help extend New Margaret Avenue another 500 feet east of Indiana 46/U.S. 40, making for a total length of 1,070 feet. Money for the contract is in Redevelopment Commission bank accounts, a Redevelopment Department official said at the meeting.

Terre Haute’s Redevelopment Commission is also paying for a sewer extension that will also serve Meijer and any hoped-for nearby development. The money is to be paid back through future property tax payments generated in that area.

The board, a five-person body appointed by the mayor, also awarded a contract for $367,168 to ST Construction for miscellaneous repairs to curbs, gutters, Americans with Disability Act-compliant ramps and other concrete work. ST Construction’s was the lower of two bids opened by the board on July 9.

The board also approved sidewalk seating for two Wabash Avenue businesses, Yogurt in Love and Chava’s Mexican Grill. Bob Murray, president of the board, told a representative of Chava’s that some downtown business owners have complained that the tables used by the restaurant on the sidewalk are too large and not always cleaned. A representative of the business said he would relay that information to the business’s ownership. Restaurants with approval for sidewalk seating must leave at least five feet of clear sidewalk space.

Finally, the board also approved a “change order” for work on a sanitary sewer lift station associated with the Indiana 641 bypass project. The change will add another $10,120 to the project’s cost.

Murray suggested that the city might consider future contracts requiring contractors to absorb a portion of the cost of any changes made necessary because of omissions in design.

The Board of Public Works and Safety oversees contracts for the city of Terre Haute. It also grants temporary usage of city-owned property, such as sidewalks or streets.
