TH police seize 1.5 pounds of crystal meth

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute police made a large-scale methamphetamine bust on the city’s east side almost by accident Wednesday.

Officers were at a home in the normally-quiet Terre Vista neighborhood looking for a woman wanted for an alleged parole violation. While setting up around the home, the officers noticed a man and woman leaving the rear of the house and the man placing two black bags near an air condition unit, said Assistant Terre Haute Police Chief Shawn Keen.

When the officers approached, the man, later identified as Jared West, 57, of Terre Haute, became upset and started yelling at the officers, Keen said. West then went back into the home and locked the door. Police then checked the bags and discovered more than 700 grams of a substance that preliminarily tested positive for methamphetamine inside, he said.

West came outside again and tried to punch one of the officers. He was then arrested. West appeared in Vigo County court Thursday, where he was charged with dealing methamphetamine. His bond was set at $100,000 and he is scheduled to return to Vigo Superior Court 5 on Wednesday.

A later search of the home found several items consistent with the distribution of methamphetamine, Keen said.

The woman, identified as Deena Hancock, 27, of Terre Haute, was also taken into custody along with two other people at the home: Savanna Green, 20, of Rosedale, and Kenneth Hoff, 42, of Terre Haute.

Hancock was facing preliminary allegations of a parole violation and maintaining a common nuisance. Green was arrested on allegations of maintaining a common nuisance and Hoff was facing allegations of visiting a common nuisance.

The bust – uncovering more than a pound-and-a-half of crystal meth – was one of the largest-ever seizures of the illegal substance by patrol officers outside of a formal investigation, Keen said. Crystal meth has a street value of about $80 per gram, according to, a drug treatment website. There are approximately 28 grams in an ounce.

“I’m really proud of the two officers,” Keen said Thursday, speaking of officers Matt Rains and Jeremy Bales. “They did a remarkable job using their tactics and their observation skills… It was a really good job.”
