School Board to consider emergency expenditure request

$55K to replace Honey Creek fire alarm

TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County School Corp. is requesting an emergency expenditure of $55,000 to replace the fire alarm system at Honey Creek Middle School.

The School Board will consider the request  when it meets at 6 p.m. Monday in the administration building, 686 Wabash Ave.

The school district’s maintenance staff has had several different issues with the fire alarm panel. After extensive investigation, it has been determined that the only way to resolve these ongoing issues is to replace the compete fire system, due to the obsolescence of replacement parts, according to information presented to the board.

The fire system is comprised of the fire alarm panel, fire alarm devices, LCD enunciator panel and audio visual devices.

The school opened in 1993.

Because funds were not budgeted for this replacement during the 2014 budget cycle, the district is requesting approval to use capital project emergency funds.

“The replacement of this system will insure that we are able to maintain a safe school environment well into the future,” according to information presented to the board.

In other items, the board will be asked to approve a  2015-16 calendar that includes the following:

n School for 2015-16 begins Aug. 11 and ends on June 2 (student days).

n A five-day Thanksgiving vacation from Monday, Nov. 23 through Friday, Nov. 27, only two of which are paid “holidays.”

n A full two-week winter break.

n President’s Day with the Friday preceding it as a no school day (not a paid holiday).

n Extended spring break will include the preceding Thursday and the Monday following the week of spring break (although March 24 and April 4 are snow makeup days).

n Additional “snow make up days” are on April 15 and May 27 before Memorial Day.

The calendar has four snow days built in.

The board also will be asked to approve textbook rental and related fees for 2014-15.

For half-day kindergarten, the fee is $81; for full day kindergarten, $103; grades 1-5, $118; grade 6, $129; grades 7 and 8, $134. The fees have been calculated using a formula found in Indiana statute.

Under personnel,  the board will act on two  administrative changes. Janet Brosmer, who works in central office and is currently the district reading coach, would become the new curriculum coordinator of English/language arts, reading, foreign language, instructional media and English as a second language and art, effective July 28. She would replace Val Bailey.

Mark Schimmel, currently Honey Creek Middle School assistant principal, would become principal at Terre Town Elementary, effective for the 2014-15 school year. He replaces Cinda Taylor, who is retiring.

In another change, Rick Menestrina, sixth grade social studies teacher at Honey Creek, would become dean there, effective for the 2014-15 school year.

In a special presentation, State. Sen. Tim Skinner and State Rep. Clyde Kersey will present Superintendent Dan Tanoos with a Sagamore of the Wabash award.

There will be three spotlights: middle and high school student council representatives; Battle of the Books and the VCSC HERO anti-bullying program.

Also, Mark Lee of the Vigo County Teachers Association will present a check on behalf of VCTA to the Backpack program.
