Man arrested after fleeing from police

TERRE HAUTE — A police chase in parts of two counties shortly after midnight Wednesday ended when a man was arrested after refusing to come out of his home during a 90-minute negotiation with officers.

Tyler Wayne Fagin, 36, was taken to the Vigo County Jail and faces charges of resisting law enforcement and receiving stolen auto parts, both class-D felonies, and reckless driving, a class-B misdemeanor. Additional charges may be pending in Clay County.

The chase began when, according to a press release, when Indiana State Police Troopers Ted Robertson and David Petrowski attempted to stop a pickup they believed had disregarded a stop sign at Vigo Drive and Carlisle Street in southern Vigo County.

The driver failed to stop and turned south on U.S. 41, according to the press release, still refusing to stop for the emergency lights and siren. The driver turned east onto Woodsmall Drive and continued east through Vigo County and into Clay County.

Troopers lost sight of the vehicle near Clay County roads 100 South and 200 West.

A short time later, Clay County Sheriff’s deputies located the truck abandoned in a farm field near County Road  200 West and Indiana 46. Minutes later, a nearby farmer reported his 1993 Ford F150 pickup truck stolen from his residence.

At mid-morning Thursday, the farmer’s stolen pickup was found near the suspect’s home at Washington and South 11th streets.

At about 11 a.m., Fagin was found at his residence, but, police said, he refused to comply with demands by officers to surrender. After nearly 11⁄2 hours negotiating with members of the THPD Negotiators Unit, Fagin surrendered without incident to members of the THPD SWAT unit, according to the press release.
