Motorcycle hits car on U.S. 40

Putnam County man in critical condition

TERRE HAUTE — A crash Tuesday afternoon on U.S. 40 east of Terre Haute left a Putnam County man in critical condition.

About 3:18 p.m. a motorcycle ridden by Rayman Snider of Cloverdale struck the rear of a car being driven by Jenny Dean of Brazil.

Snider suffered head injuries and was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis where he was in critical condition Tuesday evening, a hospital official said. He was conscious after the crash, emergency responders said.

Dean complained of back and neck pain at the scene and was taken by Trans-Care ambulance to Union Hospital in Terre Haute, according to the Sheriff’s Department. She was treated and released, a hospital official said Tuesday evening.

According to police, Dean was stopped in the left lane of westbound U.S. 40 waiting to turn left into the Briar Ridge mobile home park. A witness told the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department that a dog ran into the roadway when Snider, who was riding westbound on a Harley-Davidson motorcycle, attempted to avoid hitting the dog. As a result, the witness said, Snider struck the rear of Dean’s stopped vehicle.

The rear of Dean’s car was badly damaged by the crash.

The crash took place on U.S. 40 between East Glenn and Seelyville just west of where Old Maple Avenue intersects with U.S. 40.

Because of the crash, police diverted westbound traffic onto Old Maple Avenue, returning to U.S. 40 at East Glenn. Eastbound traffic was mostly reduced to one lane during clean-up operations, which lasted about one hour.

In addition to the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department and Trans-Care, the Seelyville and Nevins Township fire departments and LifeLine responded to the crash.
