Authorities ID victims who died in off-road vehicle crash

A woman and two children have died following a Sunday evening off-road vehicle crash in Clay County near Center Point.

A toddler injured in the crash has been hospitalized in serious condition.

Those killed in the accident have been identified as Andrea Allen, 22, of Indianapolis, who operated the ATV; Jaylen Rawls, age 1, of Harvey, Ill., and Nevaeh Dempsey, 2, of Indianapolis. Rawls and Dempsey both were passengers.

In addition, Xavier Rawls, 2, of Harvey, Ill., was listed in stable condition at Riley Hospital in Indianapolis. He also was a passenger on the ATV.

Indiana Conservation Officer Chris Springstun reports that at 6 p.m., the Clay County Sheriff’s Department received reports of an ATV being driven in a reckless manner on County Road 200 North, east of Indiana 59. A short time later, a crash involving an ATV was reported. A post-crash fire consumed the vehicle. Jaylen Rawls and Nevaeh Dempsey were instantly killed as a result of the vehicle striking a concrete culvert wall adjacent to the road.

Allen was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital, where she later died of injuries from the crash.

Xavier Rawls was airlifted to Riley Hospital.

Autopsies on the victims are pending.

The preliminary investigation indicates that excessive speed and alcohol consumption may be contributing factors in the crash, according to a DNR Law Enforcement Division news release.

The crash is being investigated by Indiana Conservation Officers with assistance from the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana State Police and the coroners offices in Clay and Marion counties. Other agencies assisting at the scene of the accident were Center Point Volunteer Fire Department and Trans Care ambulance.
