TERRE HAUTE —
The subject of a police pursuit and manhunt along the west bank of the Wabash River is now in police custody.
Multiple police agencies earlier this morning were searching northwest of Terre Haute for a theft suspect who allegedly jumped into the river, attempting to elude authorities.
Indiana State Police, Vigo County Sheriff’s deputies and Terre Haute city police along with K-9s were searching near the Indiana 63 river bridge. The suspect was described as a white male with a stocky build and shaved head, according to police scanner traffic.
The incident began this morning when the suspect allegedly hooked a trailer carrying a jet ski to his pickup truck and drove away, police told a Tribune-Star reporter. An advisory on the theft was broadcast across the police scanner, alerting police to the incident. They spotted the suspect, and a pursuit ensued. Police say the suspect then ditched his truck near U.S. 41 and Florida Avenue, where he jumped into the Wabash River.
