White Sox promote TH's Phegley to big league club

Former North and IU standout expected to report on Friday

TERRE HAUTE — The Chicago Tribune reported on Thursday evening that Terre Haute native Josh Phegley will be promoted from Triple-A to the Chicago White Sox.

The White Sox play at Tampa Bay on Friday. According to the report, Phegley will join the White Sox in Tampa.

Phegley — who has played for the White Sox Triple-A club at Charlotte since 2011 — was not in the Knights’ lineup on Thursday when Charlotte played Gwinnett in an International League game.

According to the Tribune, Phegley’s promotion is part of a move the White Sox made on Thursday when it optioned outfielder Jordan Danks to Charlotte after the White Sox defeated Baltimore 3-2.

Phegley, who is slated to play in the MLB Futures Game in New York during All-Star festivities later this month, has had a standout season.

He is currently hitting .316 at Charlotte with 15 home runs and 41 RBI in 61 games.

The White Sox have carried catchers Tyler Flowers and Hector Gimenez throughout the 2013 season, but both have struggled.

Phegley told the Tribune-Star on June 24 that he was exercising patience as he awaited his possible Major League fate.

“The White Sox are trying to develop guys to be winners, guys who know how to win games. The White Sox got off to a slow start and we got off to a slow start,” Phegley said. “The way I’ve played so far this year has taken a lot of pressure off. I’ve done all I can.”

Phegley is one of the most decorated players to come out of Terre Haute. He helped Terre Haute North reach a semistate in 2006 and was named Mr. Baseball the same season.

Phegley moved on and earned a rare full-ride baseball scholarship at Indiana University where he was a starter for the Hoosiers for three seasons.
