Moe’s Southwest Grill slated to open on Third Street

TERRE HAUTE — A Moe’s Southwest Grill is heading to Terre Haute.

Franchise owner Harkavel Singh is constructing an 8,400-square foot building at 2828 S. Third St., of which 2,400-square feet will be used for the restaurant.

The business features made-to-order southwest foods, such as burritos, tacos, quesadillas, nachos, salads and fajitas. The fast-casual business also offers vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options. Moe’s restaurants serve free chips and salsa with each meal, according to the company’s website.

The remainder of the Third Street building is being constructed as a shell “so whoever comes in we can accommodate them according to their needs,” Singh said Friday.

The building could house up to four different businesses, or accommodate two larger businesses, depending on space requirements, Singh added.

Singh has acquired five franchises for Moe’s Southwest Grill. Two of those are being targeted for Terre Haute, two for Champaign, Ill., and one is undetermined, Singh said.

A decision to build a second Moe’s in Terre Haute will depend on the success of the original store, Singh added.

“We could not find any good spots, so we purchased this land [on South Third Street] and hopefully it will do good,” Singh said.

The restaurant is slated to open in the fall.

Singh is developing the building under Onkar Properties Inc. The building’s value is $390,000, according to the Terre Haute Building Inspector’s office.

Singh, of Terre Haute, is already familiar with franchise business. He operates Subway stores in Farmersburg, Sullivan and Bloomfield.

The first Moe’s restaurant opened in Atlanta on Dec. 1, 2000. There are now more than 420 Moe’s restaurant locations in the U.S., Canada and Turkey.

In August 2007, Moe’s Southwest Grill joined Atlanta-based FOCUS Brands, which is the franchisor of Carvel Ice Cream, Cinnabon, Schlotzsky’s, Auntie Anne’s and Seattle’s Best Coffee on military bases and in certain international markets, according to the company’s website.
