Vigo School Board to approve central pool bond resolution

TERRE HAUTE — On Monday, the Vigo County School Board will receive an update on a planned, $9.8 million aquatics center that will be built in Voorhees Park.

Lance Gassert of Garmong Construction will present the update when the board meets at 6 p.m. in the administration building, 686 Wabash Ave.

During new business, the board will be asked to take action related to the aquatics center; it will be asked to approve a final bond resolution. The project is being funded through the issuance of bonds.

“They are adopting a final bond resolution for the format of the bonds,” said Donna Wilson, chief financial officer.

The process then calls for a notice in the newspaper of an intent to sell bonds, a bid process and then awarding of the bid.

Groundbreaking for the project is slated for June, with the facility set to open in August 2015. It will replace aging pools at Terre Haute North, Terre Haute South and West Vigo high schools.

The school district has a lease agreement with the city parks board to use about eight acres of the park.

A spotlight will focus on reading. Stacy Mason, director of secondary education, will introduce this year’s Reading Recovery teachers and highlight the program.

Valarie Bailey, curriculum coordinator, will introduce Janet Brosmer, district reading coach, who will share components of the Reading Wonders online program with students and parents.
