Central Indiana Girl Scouts council kicks off capital campaign

TERRE HAUTE — Local support is growing for a Girl Scouts of Central Indiana initiative to nurture female leaders.

A statewide capital campaign to raise $6 million for a new Leadership and Learning Center at Camp Dellwood in western Marion County kicked off in the Wabash Valley during an event Wednesday at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College.

Vigo, Clay, Parke, Vermillion and Sullivan counties are part of the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana council, which offers programming and leadership opportunities to further the mission of “building girls of courage, confidence and character who make the world a better place.”

“I think it’s great that this training center is being built for the volunteers,” said Becky Buse, director of regional and community advocacy at the GSCI Terre Haute service center. “This training center will not only help the girls in the long run, but also the volunteers who need training to be leaders for the organization. It’s located at Camp Dellwood, and that already has our math and science center, so everything will now be centrally located.”

The GSCI council runs from Terre Haute in the west across the state to Richmond, covering 45 counties.

The projected costs for the building, furnishings and equipment are $6 million, with plans to start construction this year. Camp Dellwood is used annually by 12,000 girls and adults for summer day camp, troop events throughout the year, and math and science activities.

The new center will have space for volunteer collaboration and education, health and wellness offerings and administrative offices. It will bring together volunteers from across the state to share ideas about leadership, equity and equality.

“If volunteers need to do camp training, they can do it right there,” Buse said. “If they want to do math and science training, they are right there. This will be centrally located and easy to reach.”

Buse commended the support that Girl Scouting receives from The Woods and from local leaders.

“President Dottie King has always been extremely supportive of Girl Scouts, even before she was president of the university,” Buse said, “and they are now hosting events for us at The Woods. It’s been a gradually growing thing, but they are 100 percent behind us. And so is Mayor Duke Bennett. He supports us 100 percent.”

According to studies commissioned by Girls Scouts USA, only one in five girls believes she has what it takes to lead. Girls highly idealize leadership qualities and skills such as being talented, caring,  honest, hardworking and confident, but they don’t see themselves equally represented in leadership positions, according to those studies.
