TERRE HAUTE — The name of the Terre Haute man injured Monday when a mo-ped and an SUV collided has been released by police.

The driver of the mo-ped, Steven J. Bailey, 37, remains hospitalized in stable but critical condition at an Indianapolis hospital, according to Shawn Keen, assistant chief of the Terre Haute Police Department.

Keen said this morning that Bailey is not able to speak to investigators at this time about the accident.

Bailey was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital Monday morning after a 6:30 a.m. collision at Lafayette Avenue and Seventh Street.

The driver of a Jeep Grand Cherokee told police that he was southbound on Lafayette making a left turn onto Seventh Street, and did not see any other people or vehicles at the time. However, the driver reported feeling as if his vehicle had run over something, so he stopped and got out to check. He found a person and a mo-ped in the road.

Bailey suffered a head injury and other trauma, Keen said.

A relative of the Bailey told police that the man usually leaves for work in the morning and goes north on Seventh Street, then turns onto Lafayette.

There were no eyewitnesses to the incident, Keen said. It was overcast and raining at the time of the accident.

Accident reconstructionists assisted in the investigation.
