TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man has died after being burned near a backyard fire pit on Friday night. The man’s name has not been released.

Police were called to the 1000 block of Barton Avenue on a report of a man with severe burns. The man was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital but later died, said Assistant Chief Shawn Keen of the Terre Haute Police Department.

A person at the scene told police she and the man had been sitting in the backyard at a fire pit when she went into the home to answer the telephone, Keen told the Tribune-Star. Another family member soon arrived and alerted the family to the tragic fire and received help putting it out and attending to the victim.

Keen said people at the scene reported that the victim had been consuming alcohol, and people were gathering to celebrate the victim’s upcoming birthday.

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday at the Marion County Coroner’s Office.
