Driver ordered to give anti-speeding talk, Brazil schools say ‘no’

BRAZIL — A western Indiana school corporation has declined a judge’s order that a young woman speak to its high schools about the dangers of speeding.

When 20-year-old Kelsey Reid of Carbon was sentenced on two counts of involuntary manslaughter Wednesday in Clay Superior Court in Brazil, her required community service included presentations to Northview and Clay City high school students.

Clay Community Schools Superintendent Kimberly Tucker wrote Akers on Friday to decline Reid’s presentations, The Brazil Times reported.

“I have spoken with administration at the building level and do not believe that it is in the best interest of students to receive Ms. Reid as a speaker,” Tucker wrote. “The incident is too recent in the minds and hearts of many, and I am not confident that the speaker will make a compelling enough statement to articulate the appropriate message for students.”

Reid does not have a published telephone number and could not be reached for comment about the school district’s decision.

The April 2013 crash in eastern Clay County killed Alexis J. Holbert-Darkis, 20, and Darrell R. Moore, 18, both of Brazil. Both were ejected from Reid’s vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene. It was not clear if the victims or Reid attended either of the schools.

Akers said he was disappointed with the decision but he respected it.

“The school corporation obviously has had to make a tough decision based upon information they have obtained,” Akers said.

Reid was sentenced to 18 months in prison but all of the sentence was suspended except for one day plus credit for time she spent in jail. She also was sentenced to 90 days in-home detention and lost her driving privileges for five years.

Family and friends of Moore and Holbert-Darkis attended the sentencing and wore T-shirts bearing the names and smiling photos of the victims, as reported in a Tribune-Star article. Reid broke down crying and said: “I’m really sorry. I really am.”
