Wabash Valley Red Cross sets up shelter

TERRE HAUTE — The American Red Cross Wabash Valley Chapter office will serve as a shelter site for those who may be flooded out of their homes. The office is at 700 S. Third St. in Terre Haute.

Other sites could be opened in other locations and counties based on need.

Individuals or families whose homes have been flooded or may be flooded throughout the week and do not have a place to stay are urged to contact the Red Cross at 812-232-3393 or come to the chapter office.

As of about 3 p.m. Monday, no one was in need of shelter, said Carol Stevens, Red Cross executive director.

“We received several calls today. We’ll wait and see what transpires once evening arrives,” she said.

The office was going to close at 5 p.m. and then re-open from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. Monday, she said. If no one needed it for shelter, it would then close for the night.

The agency was going to leave its phone number on the front door if someone came after 10 p.m. in need of shelter; it could then re-open.

Also Monday, the Red Cross was out delivering meals to those doing sandbagging in various parts of the county, including Dresser and southwest Vigo County.

The agency has been working with area emergency management directors to reach out to families whose homes have been flooded.
