Truck lumbering down highway overturns on U.S. 41

TERRE HAUTE — No serious injuries resulted from a semitrailer crash early Tuesday morning on U.S. 41 in northern Vigo County.

Alves Oriovaldo, 59, of Davie, Fla., was driving a semitrailer hauling lumber north on U.S. 41 when he came to the curve near Evans Avenue about 4:20 a.m. Oriovaldo said the cargo shifted causing the semitrailer to veer off the right side of the road. The semitrailer then rolled over, spilling the lumber near the Terre Haute Bible Center.

Oriovaldo and a passenger, Oliver Ortega, 38, of Pompano Beach, Fla., were extricated from the vehicle by Otter Creek Fire and Rescue.

Oriovaldo suffered a wrist injury and Ortega suffered a head injury, according to a news release from the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department. Both were transported to Union Hospital and were released without being admitted.

Clean up at the scene took about three hours, but deputies were able to keep U.S. 41 open for travel.

Alcohol did not appear to be a factor and no arrests were made. Police credited seat belts with preventing more serious injuries.
