10-year-old girl rescued from well

Happened in Southern Vigo County, girl pulled out within minutes uninjured

RILEY — A 10-year-old girl was rescued by firefighters in a residence in Southern Vigo County on Saturday after she fell 15-feet down into a well, authorities said.

The child only suffered minor scrapes and bruises in the accident and did not require transportation to the hospital, according to the Riley Fire Department. She was rescued within eight minutes of firefighters arriving to the address on Deer Drive, firefighters said.

The 10-year-old girl was playing in the backyard of a residence with her family when she stepped into the concrete well cover, authorities said.

According to a release, the cover suddenly broke in half, causing her to fall approximately 15 feet down into the well into the water. Upon arrival, Riley firefighters found a calm 10-year-old girl holding onto the well piping. After firefighters lowered a ladder down to the child, she was able to climb up the ladder to a point where Riley firefighters were able to lift her from the well.

The Riley Fire Department along with Sugar Creek Fire Department Technical Rescue Team, Trans-Care Ambulance and the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident.
