Easement gives TH access to filter wastewater

TERRE HAUTE — A new easement will allow the Terre Haute Sanitary District access to land purchased from Sugar Creek Scrap for a floatable control structure that will filter wastewater.

The city already has an easement with Southwest Auto, but that easement went through the front gates of a scrap yard and then to the rear of the property. The city’s sanitary board on Tuesday approved a swap for a new easement to run along the business’s north side. The sanitary district will build an extended road from Hulman Street back to the now vacant Sugar Creek land.

A gate will also be installed and the property will be surrounded with a fence, said City Engineer Chuck Ennis.

“This will also allow easier access for the EPA when they start cleaning up that site in the spring,” the city engineer said.

That site includes several acres between Indiana 63, the Wabash River and Hulman Street.

In other business, the sanitary board re-elected officers for 2014. The board’s officers remain the same as in 2013, with Jim Winning as board president, Tim Adams as vice president and Brad Bush as secretary.
