Road repair funds half that requested

Vigo council OKs 2 tax abatements

TERRE HAUTE — The Vigo County Council on Tuesday approved $300,000 for road repairs, half the amount requested by county commissioners.

Commissioners had requested $600,000, citing the need to repair county roads following a harsh winter, but a council committee halved that and recommended the full council approve the cut. The funds are to come from the County Economic Development Income Tax.

The council also gave preliminary approval to two 10-year tax abatements.

Verdeco Recycling intends to employ 12 workers by the end of the year and 24 by 2015 with an annual payroll of $986,000. The company processes post-consumer polyethylene terrephthalate into high quality, FDA-approved food-grade resin, used to make food-grade containers such as plastic water bottles.

Casey’s General Stores Inc. plans to open a new distribution center at the Vigo County Industrial Park, employing 185 workers with an annual payroll of about $5,675,900 annually.

The council will vote on whether to give final approval on the tax abatements in a special meeting scheduled for 3 p.m. on July 21.

The council also voted to approve $280,000 to pay for lease payments on the building housing the Vigo County Community Corrections. The action delays until January a discussion to pay off the lease on the building, a move that would save the county $1.5 million over 10 years.

The county would owe more than $2.8 million if it paid off the lease this month.

The county’s lease was to expire this year, but was expanded in 2009 after the county made renovations. The expanded lease is to expire in June, 2023.

Vigo County leases the building at First and Oak streets from FAMCO Fabrication Works LLC, a company owned by Terre Haute businessman Gregory L. Gibson.
