Woman gets 4-year sentence in child sex case

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute woman arrested for sexual misconduct with a minor has received a four-year prison sentence.

Jennifer Lee Mahoney, 35, appeared Tuesday afternoon in Vigo Superior Court 3 where Judge David Bolk heard arguments from defense attorney Christopher Shema that the defendant’s husband influenced her into joining him in committing sexual acts with the teenage babysitter of the couple’s four children.

Jennifer Mahoney reported her husband Matthew’s ongoing affair to the guardian of the babysitter, Shema noted, and that led to a police investigation and the arrest of the couple.

Matthew Mahoney, a volunteer youth pastor at a Terre Haute church, admitted to seven felony counts involving sex with a minor.

He received a 12-year prison sentence and was ordered to serve 10 years in prison, followed by two years on formal probation.

Jennifer Mahoney was charged with five criminal counts, but pleaded guilty to one class-C felony. The other felony charges were dismissed, and her sentence was capped at six years.

Bolk sentenced her to four years in prison and ordered her to register as a sex offender. Mahoney has 30 days to file an appeal.

She will receive credit for 441 actual days already served in the Vigo County Jail awaiting trial.
