Carnival workers face charges of animal neglect

SULLIVAN COUNTY — Two carnival workers were arrested after being stopped by Indiana State Police on Monday afternoon on U.S. 41 in Sullivan County.

Steven Toth Jr., 21, of Davie, Fla., and Joel Baldwin, 43, no physical address, face charges of animal neglect.

According to an ISP news release, Trooper Byron Goodman of the Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division stopped a white 1995 Ford pickup pulling a homemade enclosed trailer near Indiana 54.

The trailer was found to contain two miniature horses, one male and one female. The news release states the animals appeared emaciated and in general poor health, in addition to no water, food or sufficient air flow through the trailer.

The Sullivan County Humane Society took custody of the animals and transported them to the Sullivan County Animal Hospital for treatment. The mini-horses remain in the custody of the Humane Society until further notice.

In addition, police issued numerous traffic citations for Federal Motor Carrier Safety violations, such as no log book, overloaded trailer tires and no break-away trailer brake. The vehicle and trailer were all placed out of service with the pickup truck and trailer impounded.

The men are employed by Modern Midways Carnival of Miami, Fla., and were en-route from Chadsworth, Ga., to Chicago.
