Police allege man made meth near daycare center

TERRE HAUTE — A man was arrested Monday morning in northern Vigo County on suspicion of making methamphetamine near a daycare.

Donald Ray Cox, 50, of Terre Haute, was located at a home in the 5900 block of North Erickson Street at about 10 a.m.

ISP Troopers from the Putnamville District Meth Suppression Team were acting on tips when they went to the home, which was owned by Cox’s mother and was located within 1,000 feet of a daycare.

Police found two small active meth labs, about one gram of finished product, paraphernalia items and chemicals associated with meth production. The illegal items were found in numerous outbuildings and in holes dug in the ground around the property.

Cox was arrested on charges of possession of methampetamine, manufacturing meth within 1,000 feet of a daycare, illegal storage of anhydrous, possession of precursors, dumping controlled waste and possession of paraphernalia.

He was booked into the Vigo County Jail without bail, and was set to appear in Vigo Superior Court 3 at 10 a.m. today.

Indiana State Police state that anyone can report suspected meth activity in the counties of Vigo, Clay, Parke, Vermillion, Putnam and Sullivan by calling the Putnamville Post at 765-653-4114. All tips will be investigated, and callers can remain anonymous, ISP said.
