Weather makes for busy day for police

Two people injured in Vermillion crash

PARIS, IL — Police had a busy day Saturday because of a large number of motor vehicle crashes related to snowy and slick roads.

In Vermillion County, two people were injured and a child was saved from injury by a child safety seat in a two vehicle crash on Indiana 63, according to state police.

The crash took place about 10:20 a.m. at East Fourth Street and Indiana 63 in Fairview Park just north of Clinton.

According to the Indiana State Police, George Lyons, 95, of Clinton, was west-bound on Fourth Street and attempted to cross Indiana 63. However, he drove into the path of a south-bound vehicle driven by Shannon Flowers, 34, of Lafayette.

As a result of the crash, Lyons was taken to Union Hospital in Clinton with cuts to his face and neck and also with back pain. A passenger in Flowers’ vehicle, Michelle Flowers, 28, wife of Shannon, was also taken to Union Hospital in Clinton to be treated for pain. The Flowers’ child, Gavin, 1, was in a child safety seat at the time of the crash. He was taken to the hospital for a routine check.

No tickets were issued, and alcohol and drugs were ruled out as a factor in the crash.

Other responding agencies included the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Department, Vermillion County EMS and Fairview Park Fire/Rescue.

n In addition to that collision, the Indiana State Police Putnamville District responded to several other non-injury crashes Saturday. The majority of incidents involved drivers traveling too fast for road conditions, according to the ISP.

Trouble spots were Interstate 70 in Vigo, Clay and Putnam counties and Indiana 63 in southern Vermillion and northern Vigo counties, according to an ISP news release.

In all, between 6 a.m. and 5 p.m., the ISP responded to five property damage crashes, 1 personal injury crash, 10 slide-offs with no damage, 9 calls to assist motorists with mechanically disabled vehicles and 3 calls to assist other police agencies.

The Indiana State Police strongly urge motorists to use caution, reduce speed, avoid tailgating and buckle up when operating on slick and hazardous roadways.
