Roof collapse causes evacuation of assisted living facility residents in Clinton

CLINTON — Residents of an assisted living facility in Vermillion County were evacuated Thursday night after a partial roof collapse on the building’s top floor, authorities said.

Well over 100 people were evacuated from the Clinton Chateau Apartments located at 528 South Main Street in Clinton and there were no reports of any injuries, according to the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Office.

While the cause of the collapse was not yet determined as of 10 p.m. Thursday, Sheriff’s officials said that heavy rains and construction work being done on the roof may have contributed to its collapse. Water went into the living areas and the entire building had to be evacuated, officials said.

The incident started around 8:30 p.m. as the Clinton Fire Department responded to a fire alarm in the building, authorities said.

Some residents were evacuated to a church near the apartments while others were taken to the emergency room at Union Hospital of Clinton for temporary shelter, Vermillion County Sheriff’s Office said.

Vermillion County Sheriff Robert Spence said that the American Red Cross had also been contacted and it has set up another temporary shelter at Hillcrest Community Center at North Eighth Street in Clinton. The South Vermillion School Corporation school buses were used to transport residents from the apartments to temporary shelters, Spence said.

About five of the residents were taken to a hospital not because of injuries sustained from the collapse but because of their medical condition and constant need for medical care, the Sheriff said.

Spence said that responding agencies were “doing everything they can possibly do to assure the safety of the residents.”

The Vermillion County Emergency Management, Clinton Fire Department, Fairview Fire Department,  Clinton Police Department and the Vermillion County Sheriff’s Office were among the agencies that responded to the incident.
