Offenders to clear trash from Valley highways

TERRE HAUTE — Offenders from the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility in Carlisle will be on a mission the next three weeks, clearing away trash along U.S. 41 and state highways in Sullivan, Knox and Greene counties.

Starting Monday, minimum-security offenders will pick up trash and debris along U.S. 41 from the edge of Vigo County into Knox, paying special attention to medians. Once the four-lane highway is cleared offender crews will tackle Indiana 48 in Sullivan County, Indiana 59 in Greene County and Indiana 67 in Knox. About 2,000 bags of trash were collected last year; a record cleanup, with more than 11,000 pounds worth of debris cleared from along area roadways.

“Our annual cleanup campaign is just one way for us to contribute to a cleaner environment, with immediate impact” said Superintendent Richard Brown. “The offenders provide a valuable public service, something they take pride in.”

Offender crew members, wearing reflective vests, are supervised by correctional staff with WVCF working in close partnership with the Indiana Department of Transportation.
