Downtown Sullivan to receive state grant

Indiana Lt. Gov. Becky Skillman has selected the Streets of Sullivan downtown enhancement project to receive a $5,000 grant. Sullivan’s grant was among nine grant winners totaling nearly $45,000, according to a news release.

Sullivan will use its grant to fund facade upgrades downtown.

Downtown Enhancement Grants are administered by the Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) and were created to fund projects that support and promote community-based planning, marketing and restoration efforts for Indiana Main Street communities.

“The downtown square is an important part of our rural communities, both visually and economically,” Skillman said. “These grant dollars are highly competitive and assist our Indiana Main Streets with achieving their long-term strategies.”

The Sullivan project will focus on several storefronts on West Washington Street and will include masonry work and exterior paint for three buildings.

Streets of Sullivan is partnering with the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility, the Sullivan County Chamber of Commerce, the Sullivan Lions Club and Island Way Trading Inc. to complete the project.

Indiana Main Street, a division of OCRA, was established to provide economic revitalization and professional assistance to participating communities by restoring Hoosier downtowns.
