TERRE HAUTE —
A change of venue request has been denied for a Terre Haute man arrested on suspicion of child neglect.
Larry D. Russell Jr., 39, had petitioned Vigo Superior Court 1 to have his case tried in another county, contending pretrial publicity would make it difficult to seat an impartial jury.
However, Judge John Roach denied that request, and confirmed the October trial date in Russell’s case. He has been charged with 11 criminal counts, including neglect of a dependent, criminal confinement and battery relating to foster and adoptive children who resided in his home in the 1600 block of North 12th Street.
In November 2012, a teenager found wandering in the city told police that he escaped from the Russell residence where he and his siblings had been confined in their rooms without food, water and sanitary facilities. Police investigated and found evidence that the children in the home had been tied up with duct tape at times, beaten and locked in a bedroom of the home.
Nikki Russell, 35, was also arrested and charged with 14 criminal counts, including neglect of a dependent. Her trial remains set for Aug. 26.
