TERRE HAUTE — Twelve felony charges have been filed against a Terre Haute man arrested March 28 after a police investigation revealed thousands of child pornography images and hundreds of videos on his personal computer.

Emery Norton, 25, appeared Wednesday in Vigo Superior Court 1 on charges of child exploitation, a class-C felony, and 11 charges of possession of child pornography, a class-D felony.

He was arrested at his residence in the 2500 block of North 17th Street after the Crimes Against Children Unit of the Indiana State Police performed a forensic examination of Norton’s computer as part of an investigation into online activity. Investigators found thousands of images and hundreds of videos of children ranging in age from newborn to 13 years. The alleged criminal activity occurred between Nov. 16 and March 28.

Police report that the investigation of Norton began a few of weeks ago when detectives with ISP’s Crimes Against Children Unit found that peer to peer pornographic images were being viewed and disseminated via a computer traced to Norton’s residence.

During his court hearing Wednesday, a trial date of Sept. 23 was set and a public defender was appointed. However, it was noted that the Vigo County charges against Norton may be dismissed if the case is picked up by federal authorities, who could file criminal charges.
