Pregnant mother dies in southside crash

Accident occurs at U.S. 41, Gilchrist Drive

TERRE HAUTE — A Vigo County woman involved in a motor vehicle accident at U.S. 41 and Gilchrist Drive Saturday afternoon has died, authorities have confirmed. Her unborn child also did not survive the crash, Vigo County Sheriff Greg Ewing said on Sunday afternoon.

Erin Shook, 29, one of the drivers involved in the accident, was pregnant and within a few weeks of delivery, Ewing said.

Initially, Shook was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis. A hospital spokesman said Sunday the hospital had no information to release, and referred a reporter to the Marion County coroner’s office.

The accident happened just after 5 p.m. Saturday.

Shook, who was driving a van, had been southbound on U.S. 41 and was turning east on Gilchrist and crossing northbound U.S. 41 when the accident occurred.

A pickup truck also was involved in the accident.

Two children in Shook’s van and the driver of the pickup were taken to a hospital and treated for minor injuries, Ewing said.

Shook was ejected from the van, which then rolled on her, Ewing said. Some people who were at an event at the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 841 building, 6801 S. U.S. 41, went to the accident scene and “lifted the van off of her,” he said.

The sheriff’s department and Honey Creek Fire Department responded to the accident. Northbound traffic was shut down for about an hour.
