Pair faces charges after 2-state chase

TERRE HAUTE — A police pursuit that began in Illinois and ranged into Vermillion County, Ind., ended with the arrest of two Danville, Ill., men.

Deputy Troy Vaughn of the Vermillion County (Ind.) Sheriff’s Department reports that at 2:54 a.m. Tuesday he learned of a vehicle pursuit from Illinois that had moved into Indiana southbound on Indiana 63 in the area of Indiana 32 west of Perrysville.

Vaughn joined the pursuit, which turned northbound on Indiana 63 then turned west onto Interstate 74 back into Illinois. The suspect vehicle was traveling northbound in southbound lanes and westbound into eastbound lanes, endangering lives of other motorists, police said.

Once back in Illinois, the pursuit turned south onto Lynch Road and then went east onto Rileysburg Road, crossing back into Indiana. The pursuit ended in Indiana after a front tire on the suspect vehicle was disabled by stop sticks deployed by a Danville, Ill., police officer.

The suspects then fled northbound on foot, but were soon apprehended.

The passenger of the car, 31-year-old Alejandro Cardoza, was wanted on a warrant for failure to appear in Vermilion County, Ill. He was also found to be in possession of a controlled substance.

The driver of the car, 20-year-old Daniel Cardoza, was charged with resisting law enforcement using a vehicle and reckless driving.

Both were booked into jail in Vermillion County, Ind.
