Tip leads to arrest of drunken driver

Police say driver had 0.10 BAC

TERRE HAUTE — A citizen tip led to the arrest of an Owen County man suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol Thursday night on Interstate 70 east of Terre Haute.

A motorist called 911 after noticing another motorist driving erratically around the 29-mile marker of westbound I-70 about 11:50 p.m., according to the Indiana State Police.

Soon, ISP Trooper Jonathan Cumbie spotted the vehicle just to the west of the Brazil exit at about the 23-mile marker. The Chevrolet passenger car was following a semitrailer too closely and moving left-of-center and onto the shoulder, an ISP news release stated.

Trooper Cumbie stopped the vehicle and the driver, identified as James L. Campbell, 44, of Spencer, “smelled of alcohol and displayed classic signs of intoxication,” the news release stated. Campbell was reportedly attempting to get home to Spencer but was nearly 20 miles west of the exit to Spencer and did not know his location at the time of the arrest, according to the ISP.

Campbell was taken to the Clay County jail where he his blood alcohol level tested at 0.10.

He is facing a misdemeanor allegation of operating a vehicle while intoxicated.

The Indiana State Police remind motorists of the importance of dialing 911 to report possibly impaired drivers.
