Teens soon to get cool apparel spot

New clothing store set to provide 30 full-time/part-time jobs

TERRE HAUTE — The name may sound cold but Five Below is currently among the hottest retail chains in the country with a new location set to open next month in Terre Haute.

Work is under way at Towne South Plaza where a new Five Below, a discount store that caters to teens and pre-teens, is set to open April 25. Everything in the store sells for $5 or less.

“We are really excited about this location,” said Liz Romaine, marketing manager for the Philadelphia-based business in a telephone interview Friday.

There are currently more than 300 Five Below store locations and the retailer hopes to open another 62 this year, Romaine said. “We’re a very fast-growth retailer.”

The Terre Haute Five Below store, which is near Best Buy, Pet Smart and the Guitar Center, will employ about 30 people in both full- and part-time jobs, Romaine said.

The other retailers near the future-site were a big part of the reason the chain chose to locate here, she said.

“We have some really great co-tenants,” Romaine said.

The store will open Friday, April 25, and, all that weekend, Five Below plans a number of special events and offers for customers. The first 300 shoppers Friday, Saturday and Sunday will receive a free T-shirt, for example, Romaine said, adding there will also be free hot dogs Friday and Saturday and a special “mystery ticket” giveaway on the opening day.

“We have a great grand opening,” she said.

Five Below stock, which trades on the NASDAQ exchange under the symbol FIVE, surged 15 percent Wednesday after favorable earnings reports.

The nearest Five Below store is in Plainfield. All store locations are company-owned.
