County Council looks at financing deputies in schools

TERRE HAUTE — Vigo County Prosecutor Terry Modesitt is pledging $30,000 from deferral funds toward the salaries of special deputies to be assigned to 10 schools in the county.

Vigo County Sheriff Greg Ewing Tuesday presented his request of $135,000, a recommendation stemming from the sheriff’s Safe Schools Task Force, to the Vigo County Council. The request, which will pay for deputies assigned to the schools, was assigned to a committee. The full council will vote on the appropriation at the council’s March 12 meeting.

The county schools are Otter Creek Middle School; Honey Creek Middle School; Rio Grande Elementary; Lost Creek Elementary; Riley Elementary; Dixie Bee Elementary; Hoosier Prairie Elementary; West Vigo Elementary; Sugar Creek Consolidated Elementary; and Fayette Elementary.

The Vigo County School Corporation would also pay $135,000 for the special deputies. A separate plan calls for the school corporation and the city of Terre Haute to divide the cost to station officers in schools inside city limits. That total cost is $353,000. The school corporation has 28 schools, of which 22 currently do not have armed officers — 12 in the city and 10 in the county.

“We pledge our support for the extra security at the schools and what the sheriff is trying to do. Obviously we have to protect our children,” Modesitt told the council.

“We have crunched our numbers some to look to see what we could pledge toward the project. We feel confident we can pledge $30,000 for next year from some of our deferral funds… subject to your approval, of course,” the prosecutor said.

In other business, the council approved a resolution that allows the county auditor to transfer existing personnel appropriations within personal services. The idea is to keep the medical insurance funds used only for use on medical insurance purposes.

Prior to the resolution, if an employee with a family insurance plan left the county, and a new person was hired that required a single person plan, the remaining budgeted funds could be transferred for other uses within a department, such as over time pay.

“It stops that, but also allows us to transfer money into another department’s budget that may need that insurance funding” for medical coverage, Seprodi said.
