UPDATE: Names of 3 men involved in a.m. Clay County crash released

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man remains hospitalized in Indianapolis following a two-vehicle crash this morning in western Clay County.

Christopher Ibberson, 24, sustained leg injuries in the 6:36 a.m. accident on Indiana 46 about one mile east of the Clay/Vigo County line. He was airlifted to Methodist Hospital for treatment where he was listed in critical condition this afternoon.

Ibberson’s pickup crossed the center line while headed west on Indiana 46 about 1 mile east of the Clay/Vigo County line, said Deputy Brian Helmer of the Clay County Sheriff’s Department. The pickup collided head-on with an eastbound Jeep driven by Robert Moore, 31, of Terre Haute.

Moore told police that the westbound truck was attempting to pass another westbound vehicle. Moore said he slowed his Jeep but was unable to avoid the head-on collision.

A witness told police that the pickup truck was traveling erratically prior to the accident.

Ibberson was trapped in his vehicle and it took about 30 minutes for firefighters to free him, Helmer said. His passenger, 22-year-old Zachary Garrett, also of Terre Haute, was not injured and declined medical treatment.

The Riley Fire Department freed the driver of the pickup truck, according to a news release from Riley Fire, which responded at approximately 6:45 a.m. The Corey Fire Department also assisted at the scene along with TransCare ambulance, Helmer stated.
