Motorcycle, car crash injures two

TERRE HAUTE — A man was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital today after his motorcycle crashed into the rear of a car on U.S. 40 east of Terre Haute.

The name of the motorcycle rider, who police said suffered head injuries but was conscious at the scene, was not immediately available.

Witnesses told police the rider was traveling westbound on U.S. 40 when he swerved to miss a dog. The rider then crashed his larger-model Harley Davidson motorcycle into the rear of a red, four-door car that was stopped and waiting to make a lefthand turn into a mobile home park between Seelyville and East Glenn, just west of where Old Maple Avenue meets U.S. 40.

The car received extensive damage to its trunk area. The driver of the car received what emergency responders called minor injuries from the crash. She was transported to an area hospital by ambulance.

The crash caused westbound traffic to be diverted from U.S. 40 to Old Maple Avenue and then back to U.S. 40 at East Glenn between about 3 and 4 p.m. Eastbound lanes were temporarily blocked as a wrecker towed away the car, but otherwise remained open to one-lane traffic after the crash.

Fire and rescue crews from Seelyville and Nevins Township responded to the crash as did the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, Trans-Care and LifeLine.
