Painting for MS awareness

TERRE HAUTE — Volunteers with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society-Indiana State Chapter on Sunday painted the agency logo on the pavement at the intersection of Fifth Street and Wabash Avenue to raise awareness about multiple sclerosis and the upcoming Walk MS event.

The annual project is driven by the local community to raise awareness about multiple sclerosis, which affects more than 2.1 million people worldwide. National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Indiana chapter serves more than 7,500 Hoosiers living with MS.

The painting is a kickoff to Walk MS: Wabash Valley, which will take place on Sept. 14 at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. The Wabash Valley walk is one of eight Walk MS events throughout the state to generate research funds toward a cure and to provide programs and services to Hoosiers living with MS.

MS is the most disabling disease among young adults in the United States, according to a news release from the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. And there is now no cure for the disease.

In addition to raising funds for a cure, Walk MS also serves as a rallying point for thousands of family, friends, colleagues, neighbors and loved ones to show their support for those living with the challenges of MS. Six walks were took place in various locations during April and May, and two events are scheduled for September.

To register for Walk MS: Wabash Valley, call 1-800-344-4867, option 2, or visit www.walkMSindiana.org.

Onsite registration is also available, beginning at 9 a.m. the day of the event.
